Traveling to Phuket and Krabi? Here's What You Need to Know.

Having been there almost a dozen times, I can confidently say that Thailand is one of my favourite countries in South East Asia. From the stunning landscapes to the incredible cuisine, Thailand has so much to offer. The last time I visited was pre-COVID-19 in 2020, and ever since the pandemic I had been craving to go back.  So, when the tourism board contacted me asking if I wanted to go in 2022, I immediately packed my bags and headed across the globe. Since it has been nearly two years since I have been to Thailand, I thought it would be good to do a blog post on things to know before traveling to Phuket and Krabi. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to message me on Instagram or send me an email!

THINGS TO KNOW.

  • Thai people are the nicest! If you need anything, Thai people are usually happy to help. If you need a driver, tour, or anything, ask the front desk of your accommodation for help.
  • Keep cash on your body! While a lot of places take credit card, cash is very important to have in South East Asia. I always try to keep $50-100 worth of cash on me at all times, just in case.
  • Thailand is also a great place to haggle so feel free to negotiate on prices when shopping to save a few bucks.
  • The local currency is THB (Thai Baht) and the exchange rate is $1 USD : ฿33.54 THB (As of March 2022). So just divide the price you see by ~30 and you’ll get the USD equivalent more-or-less.
  • Phuket and Krabi have some of the best nightlife. If you love to party make sure to visit Patong Beach and Ko Phi Phi.
  • Phuket and Krabi is quite touristic. You will have no problem getting around without knowing Thai. You can more-or-less get anything you need in the city.
  • I’d suggest getting a local SIM card as they are inexpensive. There are a couple of providers (TrueMove, DTAC or AIS); I usually go with True. You can also purchase an eSIM , which I've been using a lot recently and has been a life saver. I personally use the app Airalo. You can get $3 USD off using the code ELLIOT2625. eSIMs are safe, and it also allows you to have data without having to remove your physical SIM card or roam.
  • People drive on the left side of the road. If you are renting a car, you might need an IDP (International Drivers Permit). Do some research on how to get one in your country as it differs around the world.
  • Refrain from drinking tap water and non-filtered iced. Only drink their water if the restaurant is reputable. Or drink coconut water and ask for a paper straw and save the environment!
  • Thailand uses the standard North American plugs and sockets, but some hotels will have European sockets. Bring an adapter just in case!

WHEN TO GO.

Being a SEA (South East Asian) country, Thailand has hot, wet, and dry seasons instead of the usual spring, summer, fall and winter. I would say that the best time to visit Phuket or Krabi is between October and April as this is the cooler, drier “winter” season. April-May gets super hot, and June- August is super wet.

If you visit in May or September, chances are you’ll see some rain, but don’t let that scare you! These are tropical rains so it’ll downpour for an hour or two and then clear up (sometimes once or twice a day). You can definitely still enjoy Thailand during the rainy season and looking back at my travels, 80% of my time spent in Thailand was during rainy season. Just keep in mind that it does get quite hot (+30-40 degrees Celsius)!

For Phuket and Krabi, I would suggest visiting in January-March.
